On Sept. 26, Catherine Grove, Jim Clark and newcomers Johnny Henderson, Robert Rowlett, Vachik and Raffi Lazarian, and Sandy, Jerry and Amy King participated in a hike on the backcountry loop at Mousetail Landing State Park. On Oct. 12, the Northwest Chapter returned to Ferne Clyffe State Park in Goreville, Illinois. This time we concentrated on the Big Rocky Hollow Trail (seasonal waterfall was a trickle), the Blackjack Oak Trail to overlooks, and the Hawk's Cave Trail before we ventured out to take in the natural bridge and Happy Hollow Creek. This was the first experience at Ferne Clyffe for all but Jim Toomey and Jim Clark. Other participants included Robert Rowlett, Sandy Davis, Johnny Henderson, and Jim Toomey's friend. We returned to Shiloh on Nov. 16. This time we managed to answer every question on our compass course questionnaires. Mike Fultz (who bounced over the trails somewhat akin to Tigger) atoned for his having gotten us off course a couple times by backtracking and finding the markers we had missed. The day was cold (mid 30s). There was still enough fall color to cheer us on an otherwise grey day. There seemed to be Boy Scouts everywhere! Participants included Mike Fultz, Heather Harned, Johnny Henderson, Robert Rowlett, Vivian Norwood, Anna Clark, and Jim Clark. |
