Methods in Geoscience

Prerequisites: GEOG 151-152 or GEOG 201-202 or GEOL 110-120.

GEOG 210 is a survey course which focuses on the research methods and associated techniques commonly used by geologists and geographers.

This course is team-taught by two faculty members from the disciplines of geography and geology.

The following topics are usually presented:

• Scholarly Journals and Books
• The Structure of Scholarly Journal Articles
• Archival Research Methods and Resources
• Extracting, Summarizing, and Citing Archival Sources
• Bad Writing Techniques (or, What Not to Do)
• Data, Statistics, and the Graphic Representation of Quantitative Data Sets
• Oral Presentation Techniques
• Abstracts
• Academic Integrity
• Safety in the Field
• Planning for Future Endeavors in the Geosciences

Students are usually evaluated through several exams, a major multi-stage archival research project or literature review, a formal oral presentation, and several assignments.

Readings and research-oriented tasks are assigned throughout the semester.
