Basic Course Info

• Introductory / Intermediate / Advanced Database Applications

Description:

• Hands-on experience in data base applications at the introductory / intermediate / advanced level.
• Pass/Fail option.

Credit Hours:

• 1 each for 221, 222, 223

Prerequisites:

• 221: none
• 222: 221 or CSCI 201
• 223: 222

Textbooks and Materials:

• New Perspectives on Microsoft Office Access 2007, Comprehensive
  (Adamski and Finnegan), Course Technology / CENGAGE Learning (formerly Thomson), ISBN 978-1-4239-0589-9.

General Course Objectives, Student Outcomes:

• The goal of this course is to increase increase the students' understanding of database concepts and build database skills.
• This goal should increase students' overall technicals skills.

Course Outline:

• 221: Tutorials 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
  10 class meetings, Jan 15 thru Feb 14.
  Exam will be on last meeting.

• 222: Tutorials 6, 7, 8, 9.
  10 class meetings, Feb 19 thru March 27.
  No class on March 11 or 13 (Spring Break).
  Exam will be on last meeting.

• 223: Tutorials 10, 11, 12.
  6 class meetings, April 1 thru April 24.
  No class on April 15 or 17 (Alternative work will be announced).
  Exam will be at the end of last meeting.

• 1, 2, or 3 class meetings for each tutorial covered (varies from chapter to chapter).
• 1 class meeting for final exam (for 223, exam at end of regular class meeting).
• The exact beginning sequence and total number of tutorials per course is subject to change. The sequence 221, 222, 223 is taught on the presumption that students are taking all 3. If not, students are expected to be ready to "jump in" at the appropriate chapter, which may involve doing a chapter or two of "catch up" work in order to have case databases in sync with the appropriate beginning chapter. TAKE ALL THE SEQUENCES, OR JUMP IN AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Policies (Grading, etc)

• Grade will be based upon the following:
  • Attendance: 10 points per class.
  • Quizzes: 20 points per quiz, up to 4 quizzes.
  • Assignments: 100 points each.
  • Final Exam, 40 points x number of cases assigned (ex: 40 x 4 = 160).
    INFS 221: No exemptions. Exam includes written and hands-on.
    INFS 222: Exemptions TBA. Exam is written only.
    INFS 223: Exemptions TBA. Exam is written only.
  • Total points earned, divided by the total points possible, applied to scale: 90%=A, 80%=B, 70%=C, 60%=D, 59% and below=F.

• Assignments:
  • All assignments will be turned in via the BlackBoard digital drop box, by 5 p.m. on the due date unless otherwise indicated.
  • An assignment not turned by this time as a result of an excused absence must be turned in by 5 p.m. of the day after the absence period, unless other arrangements are agreed upon. Acceptance of excused absence is at the sole disgression of the instructor. Athletes, musicians, etc, should provide documentation of activities that will require them to miss class, prepared by their coach, director, etc, on official departmental letterhead.
  • Unexcused late assignments are not accepted.

• Cheating on tests is not tolerated.
