Course Specific Objectives related to Course Description:
Students should gain an understanding and appreciation of the modeling,
design, development, operation, maintenance, and management of databases.
Specific course objectives include:
- Learn the role of databases and database applications in contemporary organizations (BSBA 1, 5, 6)
- Learn and practice data modeling using the entity-relationship
and semantic object models (BSBA 3, 6)
- Learn and practice developing database designs (BSBA 3, 6)
- Understand the use of SQL and learn SQL syntax (BSBA 3, 6)
- Learn emerging Internet technology that is relevant to database processing
including the use of XML,
ASP scripting, and OLE DB (BSBA 6)
- Understand the special needs of multi-user database processing and learn techniques
for controlling the consequences of concurrent data access (BSBA 6)
- Learn the need for both database administration and data administration (BSBA 1, 6)
- Understand the issues involved in enterprise data sharing and learn the nature of data warehouses (BSBA 1, 6)
Learn the features and functions of OLAP and understand its relationship to database processing (BSBA 6)
Understand the need for object database management and learn the basics of the SQL3 and ODMG standards (BSBA 6)

Course Requirements, Assessments, Evaluations, Major Assignments, and Exams:
- Assignment #1 - Chapter 2, Morgan Imports queries (50 points)
Assignment #2 - Access airline tables (200 points)
Assignment #3 - Linux / Oracle scripts (100 points)
Assignment #4 - Oracle airline tables and inserts (250 points)
- Mid-Term Test (200 points)
- Comprehensive Final Exam (700 points, no exemptions)
- Testing is about 60% of the grade (900 points), assignments about 40% of the grade (600 points).
- Compute total points awarded, divided by the total points possible,
then use scale: 90%=A, 80%=B, 70%=C, 60%=D, 59% and below=F.
- Assignments are due by 11:59 p.m. on the due date, uploaded to Canvas (unless otherwise specified).
Late assignments will not be accepted.
It is your responsiblity to consider all factors necessary to complete and submit the work on time,
including, but not limited to:
having a backup of your work in case you lose the original,
having access to another computer in case you are not able to use your primary computer,
finding Internet access at times when such access might not be available at the times and places you'd prefer.
- Attendance is mandatory.
Each unexcused absence will deduct 1% from your final percentage.
Additionally, 5 or more cumulative unexcused absences will reduce your grade by a full letter (A to B, etc).
Tests and exams missed without an accepted excuse yield zero.
Acceptance of excused absence is at instructor's sole disgression. Documentation may be requested.
- Cheating is not tolerated, period.
I will cover material in the order that I determine as the class progresses.

The course will be taught with an emphasis on using Microsoft Access and Oracle
(including writing SQL and PL/SQL). Assignment content is subject to change.
