Dr. Orville Vernon Burton, November 6, 2008

Orville Vernon Burton is Professor of History, African-American Studies, and Sociology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Professor and Senior Research Scientist at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications.  A specialist in southern history, Dr. Burton has published fourteen books and over one hundred articles, most recently The Age of Lincoln, recipient of the Heartland Prize.  Among his numerous teaching awards is the U.S. Research and Doctoral University Professor of the Year Award from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.  He will speak on Lincoln as Southerner on Thursday, November 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Watkins Auditorium of the Boling University Center.  Vernon Burton’s appearance is co-sponsored by Honors Programs and the Department of History and Philosophy.
