Dr. Michael Gibson, November 3, 2008

Michael Gibson is Professor of Geology at the University of Tennessee at Martin.  Active in a variety of areas, Dr. Gibson is one of the most widely respected scientists in the state and was instrumental in the establishment of the Cretacaous Pterotrigonia (Scabrotrigonia) thoracica as the Official State Fossil of Tennessee.  Included in his many publications are over 75 articles and a forthcoming book about Tennessee’s state fossil. Dr. Gibson has twice received the UTM Cunningham Teacher/Scholar Award and has also received the Neil Miner Award from the National Association of Geoscience Teachers, and the Distinguished Educator of the Year Award from the Tennessee Science Teacher’s Association.   He will speak on The Central America-Tennessee Connection: Microbes & Asteroids Lead to Global Life & Global Death on Monday, November 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Watkins Auditorium of the Boling University Center.  Michael Gibson’s appearance is co-sponsored by Honors Programs and the Department of Geology, Geography, and Physics.
