The President's Thoughts

The news from Alabama this summer has been dominated by one story, the serious injury to Alabama NAGT representative David Kopaska-Merkel. David, a long time supporter of geoscience education in Alabama and the current President of the southeastern section of the NAGT, was involved in a terrible one car accident in mid April while on his way to the Gulf Coast. He was planning on spending a few days doing field work and catching up on Geological Survey of Alabama and NAGT business. The accident occurred just outside of Mobile which fortunately permitted rapid airlift to a city hospital. David spent several weeks in Mobile recuperating from his accident before being moved to a specialty hospital in Atlanta for rehabilitation. He will be back in his home city of Tuscaloosa in early September.

The injury that David received resulted in paralysis and it may take many weeks for him to reach the point where he can resume any of his professional duties; however, he is as alert and dedicated to geoscience education as he ever was. David has many friends who are doing their best to help him keep up to date with Survey and SE NAGT business, but there is a possibility that some correspondence sent to him may have been missed. Any NAGT member who wrote or e-mailed David between early April and late August that has not yet received a response, is encouraged to contact me as soon as possible. We are also contacting each state NAGT representative to ensure that communication lines are maintained and in particular, that all OEST nominations submitted to the 2003 competition are accounted for. We would normally announce state winners in this edition of the Newsletter, but this year, we are going to hold off for a couple of additional weeks. State OEST winners and the southeast regional winner will be announced as soon as possible on the SE NAGT web page.
