2011 Homecoming at UT-Martin
Our first social event of the semester came at Homecoming, along with our chemistry demonstrations and periodic table of elements that was created with canned food sculpture. We also had a grill-out for student members, faculty, and people passing by. This allowed an opportunity for older and newer members to interact and relax with some homemade root beer, liquid nitrogen ice-cream, burgers, and hotdogs. Eighteen SMACS were involved in preparing for the event. A side event involved a dedication of a lamp post and two benches honoring the SMACS advisor Dr. Airee and Mrs. Airee.
The food cans sculpture created by the chapter fetched the 'Most Creative Overall' award in the annual food drive and sculptue contest sponsored by the UTM Rotaract Club (see details below in a newsclip). This also inspired the club to start a service project while promoting safety by the following activity:
Sanitized Safety Glasses for the Forgetful to Rent by Contributing for Food Cans for the Hungry and for Creating Creative Sculptured Periodic Chart
UTM SMACS sanitize the used safety glasses in EPS 308 and make these available to students in the laboratory who forgot to bring their safety glasses. It’s suggested that they donate a can of food or 1$ for a can. These cans will be used to deck a periodic chart like the one SMACS displayed at the last Homecoming on October 8, when the chapter won the Most Creative -2011 award for Rotaract Can Sculpture. These cans will be donated at the charity to feed the hungry.
