(UTM SAACS)

The University of Tennessee at Martin chapter of the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society (UTM SAACS) was organized in 1971 and has since been rated OUTSTANDING for TWENTY - EIGHT years and COMMENDABLE for FOUR years. TheUTM SAACS has been designated a Green Chapter every year since this designation was started.

Green Chemistry

During the year SAACS members helped with the UTM’s Recycle efforts four times, sponsored speakers: Dr. Jim Byford on Gasohol, October 21, Dr. Tim Burcham on Bio-diesel, November 15 and Dr. Dan Johnson on the Role of Ionic liquids in Green Chemistry.

UTM SAACS sponsored the seminar on bio-diesel by Dr. Timothy N. Burcham, professor of agriculture and natural resources, on November 15, 2008. His seminar had more than one hundred high school students and teachers attend.

UTM SAACS members helped in the Recycle Project at  UT-Martin four times during the year. In the picture SAACS president is presenting a $100 check to Project coordinators Dennis Costa and Mike McCullough for a mural that Martin artist Les MacDiarmid will prepare for the Recycle Center. Minutes of Recent Meetings

Hey guys,
We had a meeting tonight at 6:00 to discuss the ACCM trip, as well as a few other upcoming events that SAACS is involved in. Punam Patel, Kiran Vaswani, Kayla Poindexter, Casey Unger, Christy Lowe, Casey Ellington, Robert Mitchell, Kayla Baker,Corey Jones, Dr. Airee, Elizabeth Abernathy, Ashish Patel, and Carolyn Nguyen all attended. In case you could not make it, here a those upcoming events we discused:
- April 4th is the ACCM event in Murray. This is a MUST ATTEND event for those who want to be listed for the Honor Roll. The event lasts from 9:00 A.M.-2:00 P.M., but we will be leaving from the EPS parking lot at 7:30 that morning. In order to be counted as present at this event, you must stay until 12:00. Be sure to bring $5 for lunch.
-April 6th is when Dr. Johnson will be giving a presentation on Green Chemistry at 7:00 P.M. His presentation is entitled "Ionic Liquid in Green Chemistry".
-April 22nd is Earth Day. Please send any ideas that you have to Kayla Poindexter, and you will receive credit for a meeting.
-April 25th is the Chemistry Olympiad at 8:00 A.M. Kayla Poindexter, Kayla Baker, and Elizabeth Abernathy are all signed up to work this event.
Also, for those of you who went to Salt Lake City, don't forget to pay $100 to Kiran Vaswani.

December 9, 2007- Chemistry Help Session
Members Attended: Christy Lowe, Robert Mitchell, Megan Malin, Allan Hess and Tiffany Brewer. Dr. Carol Blanchard and Faculty advisor Dr. S. K. Airee provided a great amount of help to about fifteen students.
Annually SAACS, along with some of the professors in the chemistry department, provide a help session for students at UTM to come and receive help with chemistry.

November 10, 2007- 28th Annual High School Science Bowl

October 25, 2007- Rotary Club Demo Show
Members attended set up: Christy Lowe, Robert Mitchell, Chad Waters, Punam Patel, Jessica Clepler, Kayla Poindexter and Carolyn Nguyen
Members Attended Demo Show: Christy Lowe, Robert Mitchell, Chad Waters, Megan Malin, Carol Chan, Allan Hess, Punam Patel, Kayla Poindexter, Ashish Patel, Carolyn Nguyen, Jessica Clepler and Faculty advisor Dr. S. K. Airee.
At this meeting, several SAACS performed demos related to green chemistry followed by a green chemistry power point presentation by Robert H. Mitchell.

October 25, 2007- National Chemistry Week Demos and KLS Meeting
Most of the UTM SAACS attended this meeting and demo show. Also, other colleges from around the area attended this meeting and performed demos as well. It was a fun night filled with "The many faces of chemistry."

October 24, 2007- National Chemistry Week Prep Meeting
Members Attended: Chad Waters, Punam Patel, Megan Malin, Robert Mitchell, Christy Lowe, Kayla Poindexter, Ashish Patel, Jessica Clepper, Carolyn Nguyen, Allan Hess, Carol Chan and Faculty advisor Dr. S. K. Airee

October 13, 2007- Homecoming
Members Attended: Kiran Viswani, Carol Chan, Punam Patel, Jessica Clepper, Chad Waters, Megan Malin, Kayla Poindexter, Robert Mitchell, Michael Johnson, Allan Hess, Ashish Patel, Tiffany Brewer, Kelsy Miller, Christy Lowe, Chad Poindexter, chemistry secretary Lana Ferrell and Faculty advisors Dr. S. SAACS hosted a tent on this day were we showed several demos as well as made liquid nitrogen ice cream for the visitors. The nursing students at UTM provided blood pressure checks for the guests.

Punam Patel and faculty advisor attended. Program was by Dr. John Fortman, Wright State University Title: "Humorous Chemistry on Popular TV Shows"

SAACS Green Chemistry Speaker Dahlia Haynes from Clemson University "The renewable resource material, Lactic for commodity thermoplastic applications"

Eight SAACS and FA joined Ms Haynes for dinner at the Catfish Restaurant and Steakhouse from 5 to 6:30. More than thirty students and faculty attended the seminar at 7PM

SAACS officer to recount experiences as exchange student in Germany

The University of Tennessee at Martin chapter is sponsoring a presentation by a former officer, Emily C. Bethart, about her experiences as an exchange student in Germany. The presentation will be at 7 p.m., Feb. 9, in Room 317 of the Joseph E. Johnson Engineering and Physical Sciences Building.
Bethart, a senior chemistry major, left in July 2005 as the first exchange student from the chemistry department to Technischen Universitat in Braunschweig, Germany, for a five-month exchange. She worked her "Praktikum" with Dr. Ullrich Engelhardt, the food chemist in the Lebensmittelchemie Institute, creating a standard definition for tea typing. She also enjoyed her German classes. After graduation in May 2006 at UT Martin, Bethart plans to return to Germany to work on her master's degree in preparation for teaching chemistry and English at the Hochschule level in Germany.

One of the required activities for SAACS. Need to meet 2 to 3 times prior to the clinic to prepare for this event.
