Introduction To Computer Applications

(Effective Fall 2000)

Course Objectives

Catalog Description:

Concepts of computer systems and procedures including software applications, input and output, data storage, communications and networks, internet and world wide web, and operating systems and system software. Emphasis on using integrated software tools on the microcomputer which include word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation graphics, communications, web browsers, electronic mail, personal information management, and multimedia authoring. Credit may not be received for both Computer Science 200 and Computer Science 201. Credit does not apply to computer science major or minor requirements.

 

 

Objectives:

The student will:

  1. Be familiar with terms and concepts of a computer system: notions of hardware, software, storage. files, records, fields, filenames, hardcopy, softcopy, communication.
  2. Be exposed to the general procedures necessary to have the computer accomplish an objective.
  3. Understand the fundamentals of using Windows 95 and Windows Explorer.
  4. Understand the fundamentals of word processing to create a cover letter and resume, and create a research paper with a table.
  5. Understand the fundamental concepts of a LAN and WAN and the software/hardware necessary for a LAN and Internet System.
  6. Understand the concepts of a spreadsheet and how to manipulate the entries, up to the use of simple understanding of macros.
  7. Understand the concepts of a simple database and how to build a file, access a file or files and to output information depending on files.
  8. Understand the fundamental concepts of software packages and the impact they have on the working community.
  9. Understand the use of multimedia presentations using power point.
  10. Understand the different platforms (including the apple system) and supporting software.
  11. Make use of the World Wide Web as a repository of the latest information and as an integrated learning tool.
  12. Understand strategies for purchasing, installing, and maintaining a personal computer.
  13. Integrate Office 2000 applications.
