Genetically Modified Crops

Safety Concerns

Recently the genetic modification of crops has made headlines in the news.  But humans have been making improvements to crops for centuries.  The only difference is we know have the knowledge and equipment to modify plants on the genetic level.  This has caused much debate and concern from consumers as well as scientists around the world.
The first major advancement towards genetic engineering was made by Gregor Mendel.  Mendel cross-pollinated alternative forms of the common garden pea and studied the rations of the different forms through successive generations.  He established a few fundamental "Laws of Inheritance" which remain valid today and the form the basic rules that plant breeders follow.

The future of agriculture will include an increased amount of genetic engineering.  This could come in the form of more transgenic varieties of crops for pest resistance or even improvements that lengthen the shelf life of agricultural commodities.
