Endless Loop
When downloading a virus in Eudora, McAfee Virus Scan will occasionally detect the virus in Eudora's temporary file. It cannot delete this virus, because the file is in use by Eudora. The error message is "An Error occurred with a temporary file while transferring your mail". It may also indicated that x number of messages are left to download.
The solution is to exclude Eudora's Spool folder from the scan. Once the temp file is processed and the virus moved to the inbox / attachment folder, Virus Scan will catch the virus.
To exclude the folder in VirusScan 4.5.1
1. Double click on the "VShield" icon in the system tray.
2. Click on the System tab and click Properties.
3. Click on the Exclusion tab, then click the Add button.
4. Browse to and select Eudora's spool folder, usually located here: C:/Program Files/Qualcomm/Eudora/spool
5. Then click OK.
To exclude the folder in VirusScan 7:
1. Double click on the "VShield" icon in the system tray.
2. Click the Properties button.
3. Click the All Processes on the left.
4. Click on the Detection Tab.
5. Click the Exclusion button.
6. Click the Add button, then browse to and select Eudora's spool folder, usually located here: C:/Program Files/Qualcomm/Eudora/spool
Another quick, but temporary solution, is to right click on the McAfee virus icon and select "Disable On-Acess Scan", then have eudora get e-mail. When finished select "Enable On-Access Scan". This will permit viruses to be placed in the attachment folder but after on-access scan is enabled it will catch the virus when the message is selected to be read.
