Those Crazy X's
One of the great things about the web is the ability to share images with other people. When someone visits your site, you are able to show the visually what you are trying to share with them. You can show them screenshots of a solution, examples of products you have to sell, or simply a picture of your smiling face. Doesn't help at all if they get red x's instead. So let's get rid of that. These ideas have been gleaned from threads in forums and newsgroups. They have helped some people resolve the problem but your mileage may vary.
Make sure settings are right
Under Tools > Internet Options
- Clear all the History and Temporary internet files.
- Turn off any running Proxy Server.
- Change encoding to Western European (Windows).
- Verify the following are checked under Tools-->Internet Options-->Advanced:
- Play Animations in web pages
- Enable third-party browser extensions
- Show Pictures
- If you have installed Web Accessories for Internet Explorer, make certain the Toggle Images component is not being used.
- Change caching option to "Check for newer versions of stored pages" to "Every visit to the page".
Running the following commands (in order) from Start-->Run with all program shut down
Note - this resets file associations back to the standard defaults, so some image apps may complain. You can reselect your file associations later):
- regsvr32.exe /i shdocvw.dll (all versions)
- regsvr32.exe /i shdoc401.dll (if Windows ME then regsvr32.exe /i thumbvw.dll)
- Open your Registry and check the keys below (start-->Run, type regedit.exe, press ENTER
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg Content Type should say "image/jpeg". - Do the same for .jpe and .jpeg
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif Content Type should say "image/gif"
Eliminate conflicts
Try eliminating the possibility that any download accelerators\pop-up killer\firewalls\AV programs are contributing to the problem. Norton Internet Security was a known cause when IE6 first came out -- reference Pictures Are Not Displayed on Web Sites in Internet Explorer(283807). If disabling resolves the problem, then remove\reinstall the program.
Reinstall MS Virtual Machine.
It's been suggested that unchecking "Use HTTP 1.1" and then selecting the "Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections" setting may help. This can be found under Tools-->Internet Options-->Advanced.
Open the registry and - browse to: \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Name-Space Handler\ - Delete the 'http', 'https' and 'ftp' (leave the 'mk' key). Restart PC for changes to take effect.
Do an IE Repair.
If you are not using a hosts file, then go to Windows/system32/drivers/etc and rename all host files that begin with "host" to "host.sav"
A few people have gone to the extreme measure of a clean reformat and re-install of the Operating System. Unless you have other reasons to to do so, this is not strongly recommended.
