SEJC 2012 – Convention Schedule

Convention registration will run from 3 p.m. to midnight Thursday, Feb. 9, in rooms 206A, B and C of the Boling University Center at UTM. We ask that you come to the University Center first because we do not have a single "conference hotel," per se. Instead, we have reserved much of the University Center for convention activities, as well as some labs and classrooms in other campus locations for portions of the onsite competition. At registration, you will receive your bags, badges and all other pertinent convention information, including maps and parking instructions. We also plan to have some light food available at registration, along with advice on area eateries. After your school has registered, the rest of the night is yours.

Our first activity on Friday, Feb. 10, is the 9 a.m. opening ceremony in Watkins Auditorium, located downstairs on the west side of the University Center. Immediately after the ceremony, or about 9:30 a.m., the first round of morning breakout sessions will begin on the second floor of the University Center and on the first floor of the Paul Meek Library. The second round of sessions will begin about 10:30 a.m., and the lunch break will run from 11:30 a.m. to about 1 p.m. Breakfast and lunch on Friday are both on your own.

Some of the onsite competitions will involve being outdoors and will begin at 11 a.m., meaning students who have signed up for the following categories will be able to attend only the first round of breakout sessions: photography, news reporting, feature writing, radio and TV. In return for missing the second round of sessions, those students will get a free lunch. They also need to be prepared to dress as needed for walking and being outside. Keep an eye on the weather forecast for Martin right before the convention -- in February, it could be 70 or it could be icy. We never know!

The rest of the onsite competitions will begin at 1 p.m. or later, and those instructions shall be provided to all competing students at registration.

For advisers, a roundtable session will begin at 1 p.m. with Dr. Jeff Spurlock of Troy University moderating. For all students, including those who will finish their onsite contests fairly quickly, a media fair is planned for 1-5 p.m., with a roundtable discussion on "Politics and Media" scheduled for 3 p.m.

The annual SEJC "Best of the South" awards banquet is set for 7 p.m. Friday in the Duncan Ballroom of the University Center (second floor, just above the cafeteria). We have nothing official planned post-banquet, but we do know of several UTM student group activities that might be of interest to our convention participants. We will make the appropriate event announcements at the end of the banquet.

On Saturday, Feb. 11, students are in for a real treat -- staff members of The Crimson-White, the University of Alabama student newspaper, will discuss how they coped with a major crisis when an EF4 tornado ravaged Tuscaloosa on April 27, 2011. The session will begin at 9:30 a.m. in Watkins Auditorium of the University Center.

Meanwhile, SEJC delegates will hold their annual business meeting in 229 University Center, probably beginning about 9 a.m. The annual onsite awards luncheon is set for noon, again in the Duncan Ballroom. The convention will dismiss at the conclusion of the luncheon.

We are looking forward to seeing you in Martin soon!
