Welcome
My name is Theresa Rushing. I am an instructor of mathematics at The University of Tennessee at Martin.
I am the Past President of The Mathematics Teachers of Tennessee Northwest.
The departmental syllabi for the mathematics and statistics courses taught at UTM can be found under the homepage for the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Students who are registered in my

I received a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master of Science Degree from The University of Tennessee at Martin. I have taken a number of courses beyond my Master's degree.

Before becoming a member of the faculty at UTM, I also taught in both high school and junior high.
I decided to become a mathematics teacher because mathematics is fascinating! When I was in high school, my mathematics teacher showed the class a Mobius strip; I particularly enjoyed this topic. You will find pictures of two examples of the Mobius strip above. Here is a description of a Mobius strip:
A mathematician confided |
That a Mobius band is one-sided. |
And you'll get quite a laugh |
If you cut it in half, |
For it stays in one piece when divided. |

The development of computers has allowed mathematicians to explore a new concept called fractals. Although the concept of fractals can be very complex, even kindergarten and elementary students enjoy learning about them. An example of a fractal is pictured above.
