Several Completely
Unrelated Thoughts
Wednesday, June 20
Yesterday Matt felt that it was his duty
to inform me that he was quite tired of seeing that
picture of me dripping all over my website, so I had
better post an update.
First things first, I am writing to you
from inside my new Dreamweaver (not a fancy sportscar,
just some semi-fancy computer software). It's not exactly
what you might call "brand new", but it's
much better than the old version I've been using.
I have a pretty good excuse for having
disappeared for so long — most of my time has
been devoted to Spanish! I ended up making chapter
by chapter Cranium cards for my sessions and had them
printed here on campus. I went with Cranium because
it's so versatile that we can practice vocabulary,
grammar, and talking all at once. Our coffee shop sessions
are going well, in spite of being overrun by governor's
school kids lately. Last night they came in all giggly,
apparantly having decided that they would pretend to
be British for the evening.
If you haven't heard already, there are
two recent additions to Rachel and Blair's family:
a dog and a Wii. I suppose they got the Wii so they
wouldn't have to come over and play ours all the time.
I suppose they got the dog to entertain Murray Mermelmann.
And very entertaining they are. Petey, who is very
much a beagle, sometimes likes to chase Murray. Take
Sunday, for example. There we were, sitting on the
couch, when Murray comes racing in with his bone closely
followed by Petey, who is howling at the top of this
lungs. They run wildly around the couch at least five
or six times, until Petey gets the idea to loop back
around the coffeetable and catch Murray when he comes
from behind the couch. Murray didn't know what hit
him.
Last week Emily from Jackson randomly
called me to say that she wanted to float the Buffalo
and couldn't find anyone to go with her. It just so
happened that we had been planning on doing just that
sometime this summer, but had been too lazy to come
up with a date. So, this Saturday Rachel, Blair, Emily
from Jackson, Matt, and I will be going on an adventure
to Flatwoods, Tennessee and hoping that the river hasn't
run dry before we get there.

I have never been this wet before.
Friday, June 8

While having breakfast at the coffee shop
alone, since no one showed up for the SI session, Matt
informed me over MSN Messenger that a storm was a'brewin.
I was well aware that a storm was indeed brewing (hence
the rain jacket), but what I didn't was that it was
not just a storm but a STORM. WITH ALL CAPITAL LETTERS.
So, I got ready to leave for work before
it hit, and, of course, the instant I stepped outside
it hit. Just like that. No sprinkles or foreboding thunder
or anything. Within about a minute I was soaked from
head to toe. As I struggled through the torrential downpour
and hurricane-strength winds outside Gooch, I looked
over and saw at least 30 kids staring at me in awe through
the glass doors.
Needless to say, I did not make it to
work.

Is it really June already?
Wednesday, June 6
I've been meaning to update for quite
some time now. I really don't remember what happened
the rest of last week — but I think I went to
Jackson.
Summer session started Monday. I'm not
taking any classes, but I am the SI (supplemental instructor)
for a Spanish 222 class. And no, that does not mean
that I give extra help to the retarded kids. It means
that I sit in on every class, schedule sessions outside
of class, and get paid lots of money. (Lots of money,
that is, being above minimum wage.) I'm doing things
a bit differently this time around and having half of
my sessions at our new coffee shop, BDX.I can think
of plenty of things that college kids would rather be
do than sit in a classroom all day in the middle of
the summer, so we will instead be sitting around drinking
coffee and doing relatively fun things like playing
Catch Phrase and Pictionary, which I have conveniently
spiked with Spanish vocabulary.
Matt is staying at Rachel and Blair's
apartment tonight keeping Murray Mermelmann company,
since Rachel and Blair are out of town. Let it be known
that if you ever need any housesitting done, Matt readily
accepts pay in the form of chocolate swirl cheesecake.
With milk. And if looking after a psychodog is part
of the deal, it had better be some GOOD chocolate swirl
cheesecake.
