Financial-Aid
Information
Your financial aid will travel with you for any
approved exchange or study abroad program! In order to access financial aid for
semester or year-long study
abroad, you need to do the following:
1) go through International Programs to select a program or exchange which can
be approved
for at least 12 transfer credits (9 credits for graduate students);
2) have the Study Abroad Advisor prepare a budget for your program which
takes into account
the following expenses: tuition, room and board, airfare, passport and visa,
books, study abroad
fee ($175-$250), and other charges related to education;
3) take the budget to the Financial Aid Office to meet with a counselor
regarding re-assessment of your
financial aid package.
Other than the budget, there is no special application for financial aid for
study abroad. You simply need to make sure that you have all regular application
materials and other documentation on file in the Financial Aid Office.
Financial aid can also be used for summer
programs. Financial aid for the summer is taken out of what is “left
over” from the previous year’s package. In order to receive aid during the
summer, undergraduates must take at least 6 credit hours. Many summer
programs offer 6 credits. However, a student who takes a 3 credit course abroad
must also enroll in a 3 credit course during another summer session to be
eligible for aid. Graduate students need to be enrolled for 3 credits during the
summer to be considered for aid.
Deadlines, etc...
Budgets for Fall programs will be reviewed beginning April 15.
Budgets for Spring programs will be reviewed beginning September 15.
Budgets for Summer programs will be reviewed beginning March 1.
(Students can often determine whether they are eligible for summer aid
prior to this date.)
The following types of aid are awarded by the Financial Aid Office:
Pell Grant - undergraduates
Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant - undergraduates
Perkins Loan - undergraduates, graduates
Direct Stafford Loan - undergraduates, graduates
Direct Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) - undergraduates
Students who receive any kind of scholarship or who plan to use VA
benefits while studying abroad must notify both the International Programs
and the Financial Aid Office.
Each student should check with the Financial Aid Office to verify anticipated
disbursement dates. In most cases, some or all of the financial aid award
can be released prior to departure. Financial aid will be credited to the
students’ account and applied to program charges. If funds in excess of what is
due are received, a refund check will be issued to the student.
Students who wish to apply for financial aid for the academic year following
study abroad may be required to apply from overseas. Many Spring
participants should be able to file before they leave the country, but all
full-year participants must file by mail from abroad after 1 January.
