OBJECTIVES
(Outcomes)
By
participating in General Studies 101, you
should:
1. Become acquainted with other freshmen with similar academic
interests;
2. Become acquainted with a faculty member/academic advisor in
your area of academic interest;
3. Be able to use academic survival skills;
4. Learn and use good time management tools;
5. Learn and use goal setting strategies;
6. Learn
and use critical thinking techniques;
7. Learn
and use good note taking skills;
8. Learn
and use good study and exam taking skills;
9. Learn
and make good decisions that affect your personal well-being;
10. Become aware of differences among people (cultural
diversity);
11. Register
for courses appropriate for your background and ability;
12. Have
a support group and a sense of community;
13. Become
knowledgeable about the institution’s support services;
14. Develop positive attitudes toward faculty and the
teaching/learning process;
15. Become more familiar with career opportunities;
16. Become involved in cultural events, thus become more aware of
cultural opportunities;
17.
Become
involved in the life at UT Martin outside of the classroom;
18.
Become
involved in the community through service learning;
19. Have more enthusiasm and loyalty to UT Martin;
20. Develop higher self-esteem and self-confidence;
21. Be an informed consumer of the opportunities and requirements of your education at UTM

policies and procedures at UT Martin.
(In order to Pass Freshman
Studies you MUST:)
1. Attend and participate in all activities during Freshman
Studies Week;
2.
Attend a minimum of 80% of the time that the class meets during
the semester;
3. Attend 1 Cultural Program (academic speaker series,
Vanguard, Fine arts, etc.)
4.
Complete a Time Management Plan;
5.
Complete journal sheet of time spent
studying and test/quiz scores for each class, plus other
requested entries for 5 weeks (Journal sheets must be
completed and turned in each week);
6.
Participate in critical
thinking activity;
7. Complete the Mid Term Exercise;
8.
Complete Journaling as assigned by
instructor;
9.
Participate in a Service Learning
Project with your group
10.
Pass Final Exam;
11.
You must meet with your PEP leader
one-on-one, two times during the semester ________________________________________________________
Freshman Studies Week:
1st Day (Session) with Faculty:
- Survival exercise
-Getting to know each other, the week’s schedule
-Get to know your curriculum (major)

Journal Entry DUE (in class)
2nd Day with Faculty:
-All about College;
-What you need to Know to be Successful (Ch.1)
- Registration and schedule changes
3rd Day with Faculty:
-Time Management (Make the Plan) (Ch. 2)
4th Day with Faculty:
-Preparing for the 1st week of Class
-Goal Setting
-Making the Most of Computers (Ch. 9)
NOTE: Before each class period: read the Chapter and Complete the Self-Assessment Exercise at the beginning of the Chapter. Other assignments will be listed.
Schedule for class meetings during the semester will be provided.
