What I learned/ What I wish I had known

What I learned

I learned a lot in this course. I actually liked reading the textbook, even

the parts that we didn’t cover in class, and that is a first.

I learned about how in some countries it is legal to take bribes, and how

they take advantage of that.

I also learned how a lot of countries do business such as Brazil, China, and

India. They handle their business way differently than America.

What I wish I had known

Some advice that I would give someone who is planning to take this course is

to do your EOCQ and make sure to take the quizzes ON TIME.

The tests are not that hard, but make sure that you study the quiz questions

because they come straight from the questions.

What I learned

I learned in the class is that the main key to obtaining foreign markets is adaptability and that self-referring criterion is actually the biggest problem that an individual have to overcome. The information that made an impression on was the video on anit-globalization knowing the casualties of globalization really mad an impression. I have to admit that my view on the world were fairly open but know I have to realize there is more sacrifice to be made when an individual is trying to adapt to different cultures.

I wish I had known

My advice that I have to give to someone before taking the course do not restrain your thoughts to simply your philosophy try to view new cultures with no discrimination. I wished I had known some of the different aspects of different cultures because I know now that there is so much more work to International relations that it may seem. I know that to actually grasp someone else culture takes a little more than just some notes on etiquettes and background information. You need to know their communication aspect to know their high context communication take more effort and more time.

What I Learned- We learned mostly about foreign markets and the way they conduct business. In many other countries bribes and kick backs is the only way to do business and its illegal for US companies to condone business this way. I think we all know better than that, but it sounds good on TV or in the class room. This was a productive class with many real life situations and it’s possible to make a good grade: so don’t drop it. Good Luck!

What I Wish I Had Known- Go to class and participate and you will do well. Study the online quiz questions for the test and do the homework because those are the essay part of the exams. This will be much more beneficial than trying to cheat of one of your buddies right before you turn in the homework. I’m out, have fun I’ve got just one semester left.

WHAT I LEARNED

In this course you will learn about other countries. Some of the countries will be China, Mexico, Japan, and Brazil. You will see how these countries are run an operated different from the United States. You will also see that these counties are over populated, that they are poor and that the government is very controlling. In this course I also learned kind of how to negotiate with another county. You will get to play a roll in this class where you are an American or a Brazilian. The American is going to try to sell the Brazilin a MRI machine and you will get to act out how  a negotiation goes.

WHAT I WISHED I HAD KNOWN

These are some things that you will want to know about this class. You will have Internet quizzes that will be due by the next class. You will also have “End of Chapter Questions” that will be due by the next class meeting. I would recommend you to do these questions when you have to turn them in instead of doing them all at once. This way you will know what the class is about that day and you will not go into class unprepared. This is how I would do my Internet articles also.

What I learned

I learned about trading between different countries and how one country might react to actions or techniques that another country might use in trading.  I also learned some of the history of other countries and how international trading has helped them evolve into the country they have become today.

What I wish I had known

I wish I had known about the website with the practice test on them. It would have helped on the test.  Also pay attention to the videos they 're on the test too.

1.    What I learned?

I learned the customs and personalities of foreign business people. How to

deal with them in negotiation, and how to do business with them. I think

that will be handy in the future if I ever do business with foreign

countries.

2.    I wish I had known

I wish I had known just how much time to put into studying for the tests.

The test questions come straight out of the quizzes, and if I had studied

just a little bit longer for each test, I would have recognized the

questions better.

“What I learned”

I learned a lot of information that involved different aspects of marketing not only in the United States but also with countries all around the world.  I found it interesting to learn how other countries operate and handle business propositions.  I enjoyed watching the different videos because sometimes that helps me learn and understand things better than hearing lectures day after day.  I enjoyed the activity where we broke into groups of three and acted out business deal as we acted like representatives an American company and a Brazilian company.  It helped me to realize that not all business deals are made and handled like Americans do business.

“I wish I had known”

Honestly, there is not much that I wish I would have known.  I have taken a different course under Dr. Johnston so I was pretty familiar with what his expectations of his classes are.  It is important to attend as many class periods as possible.  Even though some absences are allowed, it is better not to miss any.  When tests come around, there are essay questions that are worth many points that usually come straight from a video, discussions, etc. that are reviewed in class.  Also, make sure to complete all of the end of chapter questions as well as the practice questions.  These will both be helpful when studying for a test because a lot of questions are pulled from this material.  There is not much that I would have done differently because overall, Marketing 410 is a pretty interesting class that is worth taking.  An A is easy to make if you stay on top of things, do not put off answers the PQs or EOCQs, attend class regularly, and study in advance for tests.

Here is the assignment for the students for next semester.  If you do not get this I will have a hard copy for you today. Thanks, Rebecca McKee

1.    What I learned?

This semester I have learned a great deal about how the marketing profession works in the international world as a whole.  Different countries conduct business in different ways and as sales people we must learn to alter our thinking to fit them.

2.    I wish I had known?

Keep up with the questions and the online quizzes they will help you study.  Study all quizzes for the test they will give a you better understanding of what will be on the test.

What I learned in Marketing 410 was how much diversity there is in the world

in the way countries handle business.  I was able to get an understanding

about how business is handled in other countries compared to America. The

other culture of other countries was interesting especially Japan and

Brazil.  There is a lot of research that has to be done before doing

business with foreign countries and can be a long process. This course

really provides you with different ideas about how business is done in other

countries.

What I wish I had known about Marketing 410 is to get ahead on the

assignments, especially the internet quizzes.  Doing the quizzes at one time

really helps out.  I wish I would’ve known to study the quizzes on the

internet from the textbook’s website because a lot of information on the

test comes from these quizzes.  The most important part of the class is

attendance, if you attend class you have a major advantage because of the

points that are offered such as video handouts.

“What I learned”

I this course I learned that in the world the business practices are different in each country.  Just because something is acceptable in the U.S. doesn’t mean it will be accepted in other countries.  Watching the commercials from other countries was fun and gave us a look at the things that get customers attention in other countries.  The negotiation project made an impression on me because it put us in somewhat of a real situation.

“I wish I had known”

Get all of the end of chapter questions at the beginning of the year.  Do the quizzes online also so that you won’t forget.  BUT, make sure your computer is working good so you don’t loose your chance.  That it is going to take more time to work on.  I would have studied harder.

“WHAT I LEARNED”

I learned about the different global marketing concepts and recent developments in  international trade. I also learned how to overcome channel blocks and the benefits along with the drawbacks of globalization. Some of the highlights of the course are you get to watch a lot of interesting videos on Brazil, China, Mexico, and Japan and how they relate to the United States. By watching these videos you get to see how poor all these countries are and how controlling the government is in these countries.  Another highlight is you get to do a negotiating exercise with international organizations.  This is where you divide up into groups one Americans and one Brazilians and the object is to negotiate a final contract on a MRI system.  The different trade disputes between USA and Japan changed my way of thinking. I didn’t understand how many laws and tariffs there are on trading.

“I WISH I HAD KNOWN”

If you don’t like international or global marketing don’t take this course because the topics relate to global marketing research, emerging markets, and market regions and trade groups.  You must come to class to have a passing grade and you must participate. Study all the practice quizzes on the Internet and the handouts, that’s where most of your test questions will come from.  Also be sure to study your “ End of Chapter Questions” because you will have an essay question on your test that comes from the questions. You can do all of your “End of the chapter Questions” and Internet quizzes in one night, but I wouldn’t advise it.  It’s easier to understand if you do the work gradually and chapter by chapter.

What I learned?

I learned that there are many obstacles that come along with international marketing.  People vary across the globe from culture to culture, and that one culture can change the way a lot of people have to do business.  The highlight of the course for me was the negotiations.  I thought it was good experience.  The information about culture and how some still use bribery as a way of business was very impressive because in our society that rarely happens as much.

I wish I had known?

Advice for someone getting ready to take this course would be to just do all your work and quizzes and it will help when preparing to take your exams.  One thing I would have done differently during the course is prepared a head of time before the next class meeting.  It would help to increase you grade.

What I learned from this class was more about what goes on in the real world.  We addressed real problems that were going on in the world of business.  We also watched and studied the business marketing techniques of many real companies.

What I wish I had known was the fact that by doing your chapter questions in groups of three or four chapters at a time is a much easier way at approaching this.  I decided to do mine in groups and it allowed me to complete my weekly assignments in one sitting.

What I learned- From this class I learned that there is more to marketing abroad than most may think. I also learned that, as with any class, you must study in order to understand and retain what you’ve learned.

What I wish I had known- At the beginning of class I was warned by other students having to complete this assignment that they wish they had known about the textbook website quizzes. I used their advice and found it very helpful when preparing for the test. The textbook website in general is a good study aid.

What I learned?

I’ve learned a lot from this course. I learned how companies take a global approach to marketing from learning how to break into a closed channel.  A key aspect that changed my way of thinking as an American in general is to stop thinking that a choice by an American is always the best choice.  I also learned that to negotiate it is better to adapt to the others conformities rather than keeping your own.

I wish I had known?

I wish I could of learned more about other cultures besides the American, Japanese, and Brazilian.  China would have been a great asset I think to go into more depth since they are now a major trader with the United States.  I feel that learning on how the Chinese thinks would help Americans understand why they can live under a communist rule.

Dr. Johnston,

Here is the advice to future students.

Thanks

1)      What I learned?

I learned a lot about the ideas of protectionism and the ways that are important to other cultures. The areas such as culture and language are very important to other countries and the way they value their time. They value their time so much less productive in our eyes, but they are focusing on the things that are important to them their family. I believe that this is the most important issue that most people are concerned with their family in other countries.

2)      What I wished I had known?

I wish that I would have known that to really study the practice questions from the book that is on the web site. Study those questions before the tests it really helps you! Another thing I wish I had done was listening to little things like this advice. You start out a class and a professor says he has advice from other people; you might not want to listen that well, but take this pay attention and write some of these things down. Do your homework, it helps you review for the test, study for the test with the practice problems and review the book as well, listen in class and you will learn something no matter what. This is just a little advice take it or leave it, but either way good luck in the class!

                                                                        Evaluation

I think that the most important aspect of the course from my perspective is the importance of cultural training.  It seems that many international problems arise from the lack of ethnocentric training.  This class showed some of the barriers and impediments that companies face when dealing with the fast pace of today’s business.

I wish that I would have worked a little more ahead than I did; it seemed at times that the assignments would kind of build-up along with the on-line quizzes. Though overall I thought the pace of the class to be quite tolerable and very manageable for a 400 level course.

1.)   I have learned a lot in this class. I really

enjoyed the negotiation exercise. I thought it was fun

to actually see how people really do it. I also

enjoyed watching the videos on Mexico and Japan. I

thought that the class was really interesting.

2.) What I wished I have known is that do the quizzes

and homework and you will make a good grade. My advice

to future students is that you should come to class

and do the practice quizzes. The tests are pretty easy

if you study the practice quizzes. I also wished that

I have known that the test come from the practice

quizzes.

“What I learned”

What I have learned by taking this course has been a new way of looking at international markets.  How different cultures act different in terms of doing business.  Before the class I had know clue how different other countries are in doing business than the US.  The highlight of the course was the negotiate exercise that we did at the end of the term.  I now know two look into culture norms before trying to do business with other countries.

“I wish I had known”

Do all the EOCQ as soon as you can.  This will help you on the test big time and you wont have two worry about them the rest of the term.  Do all the homework and don’t miss class much because the stuff we talk about in class and the homework will be on the test.  Take a look and the question on the Internet before the test they will also help.  Try to read the chapters before you go to class and talk about them.

"WhatIlearnd i learned a lot about international marketing in this cource. I learned about Brazil and its economy and also about Mexico. I really liked the negotiation part of the class, it was fun and you got to learn a little about other cultures.

"I wish I had known" I really don't wish I woould have known anything really. I would inform someone to do all the quizzes and EOCQ that you give. And tell them to just have fun with the class.

Mktg 410 Advice assignment

1.)  What I learned?  To be totally honest I did not learn all that much.  Most of the material covered had been discussed in some form in one of the 7 economics courses I had already taken.  I did enjoy hearing about how Coke entered into the Japanese market.  I suppose if I learned anything it was how difficult it can be for a U.S. company to get any market share in some countries.  This is usually due to some form of government protection for certain industries.  The same thing occurs for foreign companies attempting to enter the U.S.

2.)  I wish I had Known?  I knew what I needed to know coming into this class because I had taken you for another marketing class before.  I would tell other students who are taking a course from you to answer all the quiz questions at the begging of the semester so they don’t have to worry about them later.  To study for a test all you need to do is review the quiz questions.  If you are able to answer them you will do fine on the tests.  The class is not hard if you just pay attention part of the time.  Go to class and participate or you will be bored and decide not to apply yourself.  If you start to think the class is to easy for you then you may stop trying at all and end up with a grade less than what you want.

Evaluation

What I learned

In International Marketing I was able to learn a lot.  I learned many things about how different countries and cultures do things with marketing in their country.  I learned how to go about dealing with problems of marketing in other countries.  The videos that were shown in class was a great way to teach about places in different parts of the world.  I believe seeing on film how other places operated and what they do was a very simple and easy way o teach students about international marketing.  Another thing that I really enjoyed and something that helped me were the times we got in groups and did things together, like the negotiation.  This helped me by letting other people, as well as me, to talk about what we are learning.  The EOCQ’s and quizzes helped you in learning and were a great way of studying.

I wish I had known

One thing that I can think of that I wish I had known was a little bit more about the class before I started the class. I have never taken a class on international marketing and all the material was very new to me.  I wish that I had some knowledge of the class before I started.  Another thing I wish I had known was how to study for the tests.  The first test I found out I should have looked at the multiple choice quizzes a little more.  If I had to tell someone something before they took the class would be just go to class, do the EOCQ’s, and quizzes and other assignment, and study for the test and you should not have anything to worry about.

Advice to Future Students

University of Tennessee at Martin

Professor:  Timothy C. Johnston

April L. Gray

1.  What I learned in this course is that International Marketing is very important in everyday business activities for a manager who seeks business beyond the domestic market.  Business managers must be sensitive to other cultures and take into consideration a culture’s way of doing business.  International Marketing is the performance of business activities, including pricing, promotion, product, and distribution decisions, across national borders. Managers should be aware of environmental factors such as laws, customs, and cultures because these factors vary from country to country.  I learned that managers should have certain attributes that are required for international operations.  These attributes include maturity, emotional stability, knowledge, effective sales skills, positive outlook, flexibility, cultural empathy, energetic, and enjoy traveling. The highlights of the course were videos about different cultures and globalization. The importance traits of big emerging markets were impressive and very interesting, too.  The topic about negotiability changed my perspective on the “big picture” of international marketing.  Dealing with an international market is very difficult to do because of all of the cultural differences, currency exchanges, and business activities involved. I realized that open-mindedness, sensibility, the ability to adjust to different cultures, and flexibility are definite characteristics for an international marketer to obtain.

2.  I wish I had known to go online and print out the tests so I could have studied them before the first exam.  Look over the end of chapter questions thoroughly before the exams.  Do not procrastinate and read the chapters early enough to get a good grasp of the chapters.  Pay attention to the videos and make notes because the videos might be on the test, too.

“What I Learned”

During this semester I learned a lot of interesting things.  The highlights of the course to me would have to be the negotiations.  It was a great learning experience as well as a very fun experience.  Information that made the biggest impression on me would be a video we watched about “target markets” and how to target foreign markets.  Overall this was a very helpful class.  I learned a lot of new things over the semester.

I Wish I Had Known”

On the first day of this class Mr. Johnston read previous student’s response to this assignment as well.  I really didn’t think the information would be of great benefit to me.  However I was wrong.  I wish I had listened a little better when he said the test come from the questions on the internet as well as the questions he hands out.  Study that and that only, don’t waste you time on the book.  If he gives an essay question on the exam it will come from the homework you turn in class.  Go to class and be active in discussion and you should do well in this class.

1.    “What I learned?”

I learned that you must attend class.  I also learned that if you study the

end of the chapter questions and the practices quizzes you will do average

on the test.  It is also a good idea to get on the books web site and

download the chapter quizzes; they are also very helpful when studying for

the test.  I also learned to do the end of chapter questions and quizzes in

groups of four that way you don’t have to worry about having your homework

done everyday.  It is a big time saver!!!!!!

2.    “I wish I had known.”

I wish I had known that you need to pay attention to the videos in class

because there are discussion question on the test about the videos.  I

wished that I had known everything in the “What I learned” question and I

would have done a lot better on the 1st test.

Advice Assignment

What I learned?  I learned that different cultures are

very real in today’s world, and that all of these

markets are being tapped into.  There is a very thin

line between a national economy and a global economy.

The whole world seems to be just one big marketplace,

one big economy.  That is even becoming more evident

as the internet evolves, and countries form larger

trade alliances with one another.  I was really

surprised about how much American companies treat

their foreign markets.  They are a huge revenue

generator and a lot of what American companies sell

goes to these foreign markets.

What I wish I had known?  The course is not all that challenging.  Just try to keep up on the quizzes and homework.  When you go to study for a test, there is a link he will have to practice questions for the book.

Do those!!!!!!!  It will help you tremendously.  There

was really nothing surprising about the course other

than the amount of videos we watched which seemed

sometimes repetitive but gave you an understanding on

how much advertising changes between countries.  Go

over your homework questions, write down what he

writes on the board about the homework, go over the

online quizzes and an A is not that hard to obtain.

What I learned:

I learned that if you come to class and keep up with your work and answer your practice questions you will retain the information needed to do well on the exams.  I also learned that I needed to print off the extra questions form the internet for the test.

What I wish I had known:

I wish I would have printed off the B questions for the tests and studied them more.  I think I would have missed fewer questions on the exams.
