Internet deals lab
Free Internet payments
Go to PayPal. This is a site that offers free electronic payments. Sign up and a FREE $5 will be added to your account—for you to spend as you wish, or to transfer to your regular checking account (I tried this and it works). Great for paying for eBay auctions. No software to download. What do you think of PayPal’s site?
Cheap textbooks
Go to Half.com. There you can buy books (and music and videos) for at most half the list price (plus cheap shipping and no sales tax). During a promotion they give new users a $5 coupon. My wife likes bestbookbuys.com. Jim Nance of the UTM library has a whole list of cheap book links here. What do you think of the Half.com site?
Free long-distance telephone calls
Go to Broadpoint.com. They offer FreeWay, an advertiser-supported long distance service. When you sign up you get a number to call, like a calling card. Each time you make a call, you can earn 2 minutes of free long-distance calling time for each advertisement (about 10 seconds long) that you listen to. One catch: Broadpoint requires you to sign up for a promotion from one of their sponsors (I took a free trial of TurboTax software). The free long-distance service works great (this is phone-to-phone, not Internet calling). No software to download. What do you think of the Broadpoint site?
Receive faxes on your computer for free
Go to Efax. This is a service that lets you receive faxes on your computer for FREE. When you sign up (optional) they give you a telephone number. When someone sends a fax to that number, you get an email message. You can click on the link in the email message and see the fax, and print it if you wish. You must download a free piece of software to view the faxes on your computer. This works great. What do you think of the Efax site?
