COURSE DESCRIPTION

Geography 471 is an introduction to map interpretation and design.  Concepts and techniques related to map preparation, data management, the use of thematic symbols, and graphic design are presented.  Emphasis is on thematic map design and construction.

Note: Junior standing or higher is prerequired; familiarity with PCs that use MS Windows is highly recommended.

Lectures are supplemented with computer-based laboratory sessions.  In the labs, students apply cartographic concepts and strategies through a series of map-making assignments.  Original maps are made by students using Corel Designer v12, a powerful professional-level graphics software package. By the end of the term, familiarity with Designer gives students the skills to not only produce maps on their own in the future, but to also produce other graphic design software programs.  Concepts and skills developed through this course are also useful for individuals who utilize GIS and Remote Sensing software which have map production modules.

A 15-station PC laboratory located in the Department of Geology, Geography, and Physics is available for all students in the course to work on their respective projects during portions of the class period and during business hours throughout the semester.

Examples of lecture topics:

  • How cartography is both an art and a science

  • The necessity of and differences between map projections

  • Geographic reference systems and graticules (e.g. latitude and longitude)

  • The components and hierarchical arrangements of maps

  • Statistical classification methods for quantitative cartographic data

  • Thematic map symbolization schemes (e.g. proportional point symbols, isolines, etc.)

  • Typography

  • Cartograms (see postcard shown in upper left column of this web page)

  • How maps can be constructed to promote hidden agendas

Students are required to complete three multi-format examinations and about four to five map-making assignments.  The assignments may possibly include:

  • Detailed replication of a public bus route map

  • Original "dot" or "point symbol" map

  • Original proportional point symbol map

  • Original choropleth map

  • Original map of trickery and deceit
