Master the World of Media

The Mass Media & Strategic Communication Department at UT Martin will show students how to craft their art and will set them on the path to an exciting media career – whether in broadcast, advertising, public relations, or journalism.

Students in this program will develop the skills to be creative and analytical storytellers, ignite their passions to engage others, and strive to discover the truth.

Stewart Byars Excellence in Radio Production Award

$500 to a Broadcasting And Multimedia Production student who excels in radio production.

Duke Drumm-WCMT Scholarship

$300 to an outstanding Broadcasting student.

Terry and Mitzi Hailey Award

$300 check to an outstanding major involved in Broadcasting.

Dr. Gary Steinke WUTM Broadcasting Excellence Award

$300 check (from WUTM) and name on perpetual plaque for WUTM’s most outstanding staff member.

Tenn. Association of Broadcasters Award

$500 check each to two outstanding Broadcasting students.

West Tenn. PBS Scholarship

$250 scholarship to an outstanding Broadcasting student.

Country Radio Broadcasters Scholarship

$1,000 to outstanding radio broadcasting student.

Media Design Award

$300 to an outstanding Media Design student.

Media Design IDEA Award

$150 from Dr. Rutledge ($100 first place, $50 second place).

Dr. Nanney News Writing Competition Award

$100 from Dr. Nanney to any MMSC major submitting three published articles for judging.

Wayne Tansil Scholarship

$800 to an outstanding journalism student.

Gail McCutchen Smith Editing Awards

$100 award funded and chosen by Tomi McCutchen in honor of her mother. For a student who shows excellence in copy editing, attention to detail and good news judgment. Preference is given to Print/Online Journalism students.

Swafford Public Relations Scholarships

$300 each to two Jr./Sr. Public Relations Student(s).

The University Relations Public Relations Workship

$1,500 workship to a Public Relations student.

Faculty PReps Award

$100 check to an outstanding Public Relations student with excellent public speaking skills.

Dr. Jerald Ogg MMSC/Public Relations Scholarship

$1,000 to an outstanding PR student to help fund an internship or travel study.

Kent Landers PR Internship Scholarship

$1,500. First preference is to support an outstanding PR student's expenses to complete international PR internships. Second preference is for internships at major US cities (NY, Atlanta, Chicago or LA).

Charles Baird Non-Profit PR Scholarship

$500 funded by Andrew and Amy Brown to honor his grandfather, who devoted the last 40 years of his life (until age 95) to non-profit organizations in the U.S. and abroad. This goes to a student who has a heart for NPO.

Dorotha Norton Scholarship

$600 to an outstanding public speaking student.

Dorotha and Robert Norton Scholarship

$500 to an outstanding public speaking student who shows uncommon persistence to graduate.

Gary Steinke Scholarship

A $1,000 scholarship to an outstanding MMSC major. It is funded by retired faculty member Dr. Gary Steinke. The scholarship is designed to help financially students who are involved in a major research/production project.

Nick and Cathy Dunagan Team Spirit Award

$200 from Teresa Collard.

M. Sue Kahle Excellence in Leadership Award

$200 from Teresa Collard.

Nanney-Segebarth Scholarship

$1,000 for any sequence. Preference given to outstanding local and/or non-traditional student.

Outstanding Non-Traditional Student Award

Plaque and $300 check from Richard Robinson.

Sophomore Scholarship

$1,000 to an outstanding MMSC major.

Junior Scholarship

$1,000 to an outstanding MMSC major.

Senior Scholarship

$1,000 to an outstanding MMSC major.


The communications and media industries are heavily dependent on technology, and ours is cutting edge. Check out some of the cutting-edge facilities for yourself.

Broadcast Facilities

Our high-definition television studio and control room gives students experience in producing news, public affairs, and corporate videos. The department also maintains four HD field cameras and three Avid nonlinear editing suites for tapeless video workflows.

Media Production

The department has a media production lab featuring Mac computers running Adobe Creative Suite and other software packages for print, Web, mobile, and multimedia production. Communication majors also have the opportunity to gain experience through the department’s student-operated media. WUTM 90.3 FM “The Hawk,” the campus’s nationally recognized radio station, features industry-standard production facilities.
