Dukedom, Tennessee
Some excerpts were taken from "Weakley County" by Virginia C. Vaughan
(1983)
Dukedom is one of the oldest communities in West Tennessee.
The town
developed on an old stage coach route from Dresden to Mills Point
(Hickman), Kentucky. Dukedom was established in 1830 by Duke A.
Beadles, the towns first merchant and postmaster. According to the national
census of 1850 there were 36 people listed living in Dukedom. In 1890 there
were three stores, several blacksmiths, a school and a Methodist Church.
Dukedom continue to thrive into the early 1900's but went into a steady
decline by the post World War II era. It is now but a mere crossroad
with handful of local businesses.
