Soar above with a Master in Music Education!

The purpose of the Master of Music in Music Education hybrid/online degree is to provide music educators with advanced academic and professional skills for the classroom, enhancing their ability to apply music education methods, theory, and research in the field. It consists of core music education courses, core music courses, and the student’s choice for an area of emphasis: general, choral conducting, instrumental conducting, or leadership.

Application Requirements

Diagnostic Examinations

All students must take a diagnostic examination for Music Theory and Music History. Based upon scores, students may be required to complete additional coursework for remediation before enrolling in Graduate Music Theory and Music History.

Comprehensive Examination

All MME students are required to complete a comprehensive examination at the conclusion of MUED 798, at the end of their last semester. The comprehensive examination will consist of written and oral questions posed by the master’s degree candidate’s committee. Additionally, the candidate will be required to present their research/teaching project. Must complete while enrolled in MUED 798: Research/Teaching Project in Music Education.

Areas of Emphasis

General Emphasis

The purpose of the general emphasis is to grant students the flexibility to pursue courses that interest them, strengthen their identity as a generalist, and provide the flexibility to complete the degree totally online.

Choral Conducting Emphasis

Students who select this emphasis will hone their skills as a master conductor, investigating conducting techniques that enhance rehearsal efficiency, while discovering literature appropriate for teaching. Students will take six hours of conducting on campus with a master conducting professor, as well as six hours of MUED or MUS courses, selected in consultation with their advisor.

Instrumental Conducting Emphasis

Students who select this emphasis will hone their skills as a master conductor, investigating conducting techniques that enhance rehearsal efficiency, while discovering literature appropriate for teaching. Students will take six hours of conducting on campus with a master conducting professor, as well as six hours of MUED or MUS courses, selected in consultation with their advisor.

Leadership Emphasis

Leadership is a key component of being an excellent educator. Whether the student aspires to become an educational leader, arts education advocate, or open a private music studio, this innovative emphasis allows students to explore courses in business, leadership, education, and communication. This interdisciplinary emphasis area requires MUED 750 and nine credit hours selected from BADM, COMM, EDFN and EDLD courses listed on the degree sheet. All courses should be selected in consultation with the student’s advisor.
