Sheep and Goat Center

Academics

The sheep and goat facility located on the University of Tennessee at Martin teaching farm was built in 2004. The facility, which consists of the barn and 4 pastures, currently houses 8 cheviot sheep and 15 savannah/boer cross does. Students enrolled in several of the animal science classes and labs get hands-on experience each semester by hoof trimming, determining whether or not each animal needs to be dewormed, learning about external parasite control, giving injections, and may have the opportunity to perform mastitis testing and venipuncture. Each spring students have the opportunity to be involved in lambing and kidding, as well as shearing the sheep.
