Students with Disabilities Preparing for Postsecondary Education: Know Your Rights and Responsibilities

To assist students and parents through the transition from secondary to post-secondary education, the U. S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has created an information pamphlet. The information pamphlet offers excellent insight into the differences and similarities between secondary and post-secondary education, as well as providing practical insight on how to maximize access to post-secondary education.

An Open Letter to Parents of Students With Disabilities about to Enter College

Jane E. Jarrow, Ph.D. is a prolific author and leader in the field of disability services pertaining to higher education. She has worked for over 35 years to provide equal access to higher education for students with disabilities. On her list of achievements is her long tenure as the Executive Director of the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD).

Dr. Jarrow is also a mother; this letter was written when her daughter entered post-secondary education. It is an insightful and thoughtful letter filled with excellent advice from the mother of a student with disabilities who knows first-hand the hopes, dreams, and fears that parents feel as their student with disabilities enter the college of their choice.
