Bill Waterman joined the faculty at the University of Tennessee at Martin in the fall of 2014, where he serves as the Director of Athletic Bands and teaches applied Tuba and Euphonium. In addition to teaching applied tuba and euphonium students Dr. Waterman serves as director for the Skyhawk Marching Band, Basketball Bands, and the UT Martin Concert Band.


Prior to his appointment at UT-Martin, Dr. Waterman served on the faculty at the University of Michigan at Flint (MI), the Flint Institute of Music (MI), and Jackson College (MI). Additionally, he has been the instructor of record for classes at both Michigan State University and Texas Tech University. During the summers, Dr. Waterman serves on the faculty for Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, MI.


Dr. Waterman served as music director and conductor for the award winning Capital City Brass Band (Lansing, MI). During his tenure as music director, the brass band won back-to-back first place championships in the 2013 and 2014 North American Brass Band Association (NABBA) 10-Piece Brass Band category. The band also placed second overall in their section at the 2014 NABBA Championships. The band received an overall third place finish at the 2013 US Open Brass Band Championships in St. Charles, IL, where Dr. Waterman’s arrangement of “The Carrollton March” won the award for “best new arrangement or composition.”


Dr. Waterman brings a diverse background of experience from the world of marching band. Over the past ten years he has worked as an arranger and/or instructor for groups in Kansas, Florida, and Colorado, for winds and both battery and front ensemble percussion. As a performer he has marched tuba, trombone, battery percussion, and was a two-time DCI finalist as a member of the Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps (Allentown, PA).


As a soloist, Dr. Waterman’s career is highlighted by a 2011 recital performance in Carnegie Hall. As an orchestral musician, he served as Principal Tuba with the Topeka Symphony Orchestra (Topeka, KS) for nine seasons. He has also performed with the Lansing Symphony (MI), Mason Symphony (MI), Celtic Woman Orchestra (MI), Big Spring Symphony (TX), and the Lubbock Symphony (TX).


Dr. Waterman holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Kansas, Master of Music degree from Texas Tech University and his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from Michigan State University. His primary tuba instructors are Phil Sinder, Kevin Wass, Scott Watson, and Tom Stein. Additionally, he has studied jazz with Stephen Jones and voice with Kathy McNeil.
