Rebecca Clayton

What are you doing now?

I’m a graduate student at Middle Tennessee State University in the school psychology program. It’s a three-year program that prepares us to understand and deal with a child's three major social systems: society in general, the family situation and the school system. It’s a combined M.A. and Ed.S. program with a research-based thesis required.

How did UTM Psychology Program help you achieve what you have become?

The UTM Psychology Program really prepared me well for the school psychology program. I had a great advisor and mentor that I had the opportunity to work with. One of the classes I enjoyed was Applied Behavior Analysis. In this class, I was given the opportunity to go out and work with a preschooler. I applied an intervention to help a child succeed in her academic setting. Another one of my favorite classes was my internship class. I worked with Dr. Buckelew to administer screenings to adult patients with a wide variety of medical conditions.

What advice would you give to students who are thinking about becoming UTM psychology majors?

You won’t regret it. It’s a great way to gain knowledge about why people behave the way they do. You can also have some experience of seeing it in the real world. Get to know some of the teachers and go out and find what you love to do.
