Murray State professor to give lecture at UT Martin

MARTIN, Tenn. – Dr. Kevin Qualls, associate professor of television production at Murray State University, will give a lecture on transformative use at 7 p.m., Oct. 4, at the University of Tennessee at Martin.

The lecture, titled “How Luther Campbell Screwed up Transformative Use for Everybody,” will be held in the Blankenship Recital Hall inside UT Martin’s Fine Arts Building and is open to the public.

Qualls will speak on “fair use” provisions, the Copyright Act of 1977, transformative use doctrine, and relevant court cases involving musical artists such as Luther Campbell, Marvin Gaye, Pharrell Williams and Roy Orbison. Qualls will use additional time to answer questions and present his current research, “Covering Your Digital Assets.”

Qualls has taught at Murray State University for 10 years. He holds a Juris Doctor degree from Liberty University and is a member of the American Bar Association, the Kentucky Bar Association and the Virginia State Bar. He worked as a producer for the television series “The Great American Outdoors” and for client videos at Digital Age Recording, a company he owned and operated. He has also worked as a trial attorney.
