Children of all ages tried their hands at throwing ceramic bowls during Fine Arts Spring Fling 2018 at the University of Tennessee at Martin.

April to begin with guest artists, Spring Fling at UT Martin

The month of April will begin with several guest artists in the University of Tennessee at Martin’s Department of Music as well as the second-annual Fine Arts Spring Fling on April 6.

The Department of Music will host steel drummer and professional percussionist Murray Mast at 2 p.m., April 1, in the Fine Arts Building’s Percussion Rehearsal Hall. Mast will discuss the invention of steel drums as well as his travels to the nation of Trinidad and Tobago, where the drums originate.

The UT Martin Steelband and Skyhawk Steelband, directed by faculty members Dr. Shane Jones and Chelsea Jones, will perform at 7:30 p.m., April 2, in Blankenship Recital Hall. The concert schedule will feature Mast’s compositions and arrangements, including both traditional Trinidadian Soca and Calypso music as well as Reggae, pop and rock arrangements.

The university clarinet studio will give a concert at 7:30 p.m., April 5, also in Blankenship Recital Hall. The spring concert will feature works by composers such as Johannes Brahms, Leonard Bernstein, Robert Schumann, Francis Poulenc and others.

The second-annual Fine Arts Spring Fling returns from 2-4:30 p.m., April 6, in the UT Martin Fine Arts Building. This family-friendly event includes performances and demonstrations by music, choir, sculpture, theatre, graphic design and fine art students and faculty.
