UT Martin to offer medical certification courses this fall

The University of Tennessee at Martin will offer training courses this fall for those wishing to become pharmacy or phlebotomy technicians or clinical medical assistants. Participants do not need to be UT Martin students to enroll, and classes are offered at the UT Martin centers in Jackson, Parsons, Ripley, Selmer and Somerville.

Certification courses for future pharmacy technicians is offered at the following times and locations:

  • Somerville, 6-9:30 p.m., Tuesdays, Sept. 3-Dec. 17
  • Selmer, 6-9:30 p.m., Thursdays, Sept. 5-Dec. 19
  • Parsons, 8 a.m.-noon, Saturdays, Sept. 7-Dec. 14
  • Ripley, 6-9:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 10-Oct. 31
  • Jackson, 6-9:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 17-Nov. 12

Registration is $1,199 and includes all textbooks and supplies. This comprehensive 50-hour course will prepare students to pass the pharmacy technician certification exam and work in a pharmacy setting. Topics covered include pharmacy measures, Roman numerals and abbreviations; prescription label requirements; major drug classes; formularies and unit dose systems; allegation methods and math review; total parenteral nutrition and others. The course also includes an optional 80-hour clinical rotation. Interested participants can visit utm.edu/pharmacy to register online.

A certification course for future phlebotomy technicians is offered at the following time and location:

  • Ripley, 6-9:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 5-Dec. 12

The registration fee is $1,799 per student and includes all required textbooks and course supplies. This 90-hour training program will prepare students to pass the National Healthcare Association Certification exam, offered at the end of the course. Class topics focus on medical terminology; anatomy and physiology; and blood collection procedures. Students will also gain hands-on experience collecting and handling specimen. A certification course for future clinical medical assistants is offered at the following time and location:

  • Ripley, 8 a.m.-noon, Saturdays, Sept. 7, 2019-June 27, 2020

The registration fee is $2,599 per student and includes all textbooks and supplies. This course includes 140 hours of classroom instruction and 160 hours of clinical rotation. Class topics include patient care and safety; medical and legal issues; vital signs and documentation; phlebotomy skills; specimen collection and handling; and performing 12-lead EKGs, among other skills.
