UT Martin team takes third place in regional programming competition

Jay Downing, of Hendersonville; Fate Hardin, of Brentwood; and Lukas Saul, of Franklin, won third place for the University of Tennessee at Martin during a local site competition of the Association for Computing Machinery International Collegiate Programming Contest, held Nov. 2 at UT Martin. The team solved the first two competition problems in under 10 minutes.

UT Martin has hosted this local site competition for four years and was among eight other host sites across the region for 2019. Fifteen teams from Austin Peay State University, Murray State University, Rhodes College, UT Martin and the University of Memphis competed in the five-hour competition, which tests a variety of computer programming skills through a series of challenges. Hundreds of other teams competed simultaneously at other locations across the region.

Downing, a junior; and Hardin and Saul, both seniors, are all computer science majors. Other UT Martin students who participated in the competition were James Chapman, of Bartlett; Samantha Clayton and Cody Gonsowski, both of Martin; Grace Looney, of Millington; and Hayden Nanney, of Dresden.
