The University of Tennessee at Martin Department of Management, Marketing and Information Systems will host Jim Rooney, author of “A Different Way to Win: Dan Rooney’s Story from the Super Bowl to the Rooney Rule.” Rooney will speak at 7 p.m. March 11, via Zoom.
“A Different Way to Win: Dan Rooney’s Story from the Super Bowl to the Rooney Rule…” is about Jim’s father, Dan Rooney, former chairman of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Jim’s experiences working to build relationships at the U.S. Department of State and the White House during his father’s term as ambassador to Ireland and his work with the National Football League. His father’s work included writing the Rooney Rule, which requires NFL teams to interview minority candidates for head coach, coordinator and senior administrative positions.
By telling his father’s story, Jim hopes to provide UT Martin students with a unique look at leadership and show that people will succeed while doing right by others.
Dr. Dexter Davis, associate professor of sport management, hopes by bringing Rooney to campus, students will learn valuable lessons that they can take into the field.
“I’m hopeful that students receive a message of hope and take away a renewed commitment to making the everyday, small choices that make for good leadership in the area of equality,” Davis said. “We all may not have the opportunity to have an impact like the Rooney Rule, but we can have an impact in the little things we do each and every day to make our classroom, our campus and our community a more open and inviting place for all people.”
