Groundbreaking held for Blaylock Inspirational Oracle

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Oct. 9 during UT Martin Homecoming for the new Blaylock Inspirational Oracle. The structure will be named for Dr. Paul Blaylock, a UT Martin graduate from South Fulton, Tennessee, who has worked more than four decades as both a trauma physician and as a trial attorney in the Portland, Oregon, area. The structure will be designed as an open-air Greek Parthenon and will be located near the Boling University Center. Some of the expected uses include as a reflection area for students and alumni, an outdoor classroom and as a meeting space. The facility will include a fountain and a large plaza. Participating in the groundbreaking were (l to r) Dr. Charley Deal, UT Martin vice chancellor for university advancement; Petra McPhearson, UT Martin senior vice chancellor for finance and administration; Dr. Keith Carver, UT Martin chancellor; Blaylock; Dr. Phil Watkins, UT Martin vice chancellor emeritus of student affairs; and Dr. Andy Lewter, UT Martin vice chancellor for student affairs. Watkins was a close friend and mentor to Blaylock during Dr. Blaylock’s time at UT Martin.
