Barber, Moore receive Paul and Martha Meek Leadership Awards

Gracie Barber, of Kansas City, Missouri, and Tia Moore, of Collierville, were each presented with Paul and Martha Meek Leadership Awards during the University of Tennessee at Martin’s second spring commencement ceremony May 6. These are the only awards given during commencement each semester and showcase students who have displayed outstanding community and campus service.

Barber, a mass media and strategic communication graduate, served on the Student Government Association’s freshman council and as the student affairs committee chair during her sophomore year. Her service to the university did not stop there. As an upperclassman, she became a Peer-Enabling Program (PEP) Leader where she mentored a group of freshmen. Barber accumulated over 100 hours of community service during her time at UT Martin. She was an active member of Chi Omega and served as philanthropy chair and president for the UT Martin chapter.

“Gracie is a well-rounded student who has excelled academically,” wrote Rachel Stephens, director of student life, in Barber’s nomination materials. “She is a leader who has made not only a deep impact but a wide one as well.”

Moore, an integrated studies graduate, served in many leadership roles while pursuing her undergraduate degree. She was a student ambassador, PEP Leader and held many leadership roles in Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Through her work as a PEP Leader, she led an average of 30 students during their first semester on campus. Her service was not limited to just the campus. Moore donated time to the Boys & Girls Club of Union City, the Carl Perkins Center and Crossroads Teen Center.

“Tia has demonstrated outstanding qualities of leadership through her involvement in various organizations and leadership positions on campus. …She has been a positive influence on her peers and has played an integral role in creating a welcoming and inclusive campus community,” wrote Ryan Martin, director of housing, in his nomination materials.

Dr. Paul Meek served the UT Martin campus from 1934 to 1967 in the roles of executive officer, dean, UT vice president and chancellor. This award was originally established and funded by the three Meek children to honor their parents.
