The Department of History and Philosophy offers several opportunities for students to apply their knowledge through hands-on work, travel or research experiences in their field of study. Students must meet course prerequisites and have departmental approval to enroll in these courses. Students enrolling in travel opportunities may be eligible for departmental or university stipends to pay part of the expenses. Summer Archaeology Internship at Arizona State University (Kampsville, IL)

This internship involves study and field work in archeology recovery and analysis directed by Dr. Jane E. Buikstra. Reelfoot Summer Undergraduate Research (Reelfoot Lake, TN)

This opportunity is open to students of all disciplines and involves undergraduate research in the Reelfoot watershed area. A $4,000 research grant for travel, supplies and stipend is available. Participants must create a summary report and give a presentation of findings upon their return. Students with junior and senior standing and provides two hours of credit in the chosen discipline.

Tennessee Parks Internships

These internships are generally unpaid seasonal positions for the Tennessee Park Service in their interpretive, recreational, public affairs, photography or graphic design programs. Paid positions are available through the Seasonal Interpretive Recreator Program. Representatives visit the UT Martin campus several times per year, so look for information through your department.

Discovery Park Internships

These are paid internships to complete activities such as guiding public groups, artifact collection, preservation, exhibit preparation and research work. Students must work at least 100 hours in a semester to complete the internship. Participants may not work more than 120 hours in this position.

Washington, D.C., Summer Internship Program

This competitive internship involves 10 weeks with the National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations in Washington, D.C. Students will participate in academic, research and career exploration as well as on-site visits as required. A $1,000 stipend is available to help with travel costs. Students are expected to pay their own housing and living expenses. Academic credit is available.
