Below are descriptions of the various forms of financial aid that are available for students participating in travel study. Read each description carefully to determine your eligibility and what is required to apply for the scholarship. Applications for the SGA Award and all other UTM International Awards are due February 1st, 2025. Students will be notified regarding their scholarship package by March 1st, 2025.
SGA Award
The SGA Award is funded by students for students and awards up to $500 for a domestic travel study and up to $1,200 for an international travel study or study abroad. The SGA Award can be received once each academic year.
Eligibility
Any full-time undergraduate or graduate student who enrolls in a travel-study or study-abroad program approved by the Travel-Study Scholarship Committee can apply. Normally, these will be programs sponsored by UTM, but students may request support for the travel-study/study-abroad programs they have developed on their own. Awards will be made primarily to students undertaking substantial travel-study projects, which will generally fall into the following categories: travel-study programs (at least one week in duration), language immersion programs (at least three weeks in duration), study-abroad programs lasting one semester or an entire academic year.
The Scholarship Committee will consider the following criteria when making awards:
- The cost of the applicant's travel-study program
- The duration of the program
- The program itinerary (preferably out-of-state and international travel)
- The academic content of the program
- The financial need of the applicant
- The availability of other funds to support the chosen program
Requirements
Online Application; short answer responses to the following questions:
- How will you cover the costs of the program? Do you have additional scholarship support, financial assistance, etc.?
- Why do you wish to undertake this program? How does it fit into your academic and career plans? (at least 250 words)
- How do you think you will benefit from this program on a personal as well as a professional level? (at least 250 words)
Chancellor’s Travel Award
The Chancellor’s Travel-Study Stipend is a one-time award of $2,500 toward the cost of an international travel study or study abroad. It is available to all students who qualify for the Chancellor Scholarship.
Eligibility
Any full-time undergraduate student recipient of the Chancellor’s Scholarship who enrolls in a travel-study or study-abroad program approved by the Scholarship Committee can apply. This includes travel-study programs (short-term), language immersion programs (short- or long-term), study-abroad programs lasting one semester or an entire academic year.
Requirements
Within two weeks of returning, a one-page report should be submitted explaining what the award has allowed the recipient to accomplish. Recipients may also be asked to present on their experience to campus groups during the academic year following their return.
UTM International Awards
Tom and Yukari Hyde Global Scholars Program
The Yukari Hyde award is a competitive award of up to $1,000 toward the cost of an international travel study or study abroad. It is made possible by a gift from Yukari Hyde and her late husband, Tom Hyde.
Eligibility
Any full-time undergraduate and graduate student who enrolls in an international travel-study or study-abroad program approved by the Scholarship Committee can apply. This includes travel-study programs (short-term), language immersion programs (short- or long-term), study-abroad programs lasting one semester or an entire academic year.
Requirements
Online application (Open Soon); short essay responses to the following questions:
- Why do you wish to undertake this program? How does it fit into your academic and career plans? (at least 250 words)
- What would you need to accomplish to consider this trip a success? (at least 250 words)
- How do you plan to help future students participate in an international travel/study experience? (at least 150 words)
Lewis International Travel Award
The Rodger Lewis International Travel Award is a competitive needs-based award of $1,000 toward the cost of an international travel study or study abroad. The Lewis Award is made possible by an annual gift given by Dr. Rodger Lewis who, inspired by his own cross-cultural experiences, wishes to make possible such experiences for UT Martin students.
Eligibility
Any full-time undergraduate student who enrolls in an international travel-study or study-abroad program approved by the Scholarship Committee can apply. This includes travel-study programs (short-term), language immersion programs (short- or long-term), study-abroad programs lasting one semester or an entire academic year. Five awards are given every year. Preference will be given to students demonstrating financial need and traveling to countries where English is infrequently spoken, especially countries in Asia and Central and South America.

Dougherty International Travel Opportunity
The Dougherty International Travel Opportunity provides awards of up to $1,000 toward the cost of an international travel study or study abroad. The Dougherty Award is made possible by a gift from the estate of Lew and Mary Jo Dougherty, both graduates of UT Martin who, during their lives, were both very active in supporting the university and building on its reputation and success. Their gift is a legacy representing their love of UT Martin and hope for its student body.
Eligibility
Any full-time undergraduate student who has completed at least 60 credit hours and who enrolls in an international travel-study or study-abroad program approved by the Scholarship Committee can apply. This includes travel-study programs (short-term), language immersion programs (short- or long-term), study-abroad programs lasting one semester or an entire academic year. Preference will be given to Pell-eligible students.

Other International Awards
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
U.S. undergraduate students who qualify for the Pell Grant can apply for the Gilman Award, meant to enable students of limited means to study abroad. Awards are competitive, but total up to $5,000 toward the cost of your program. You can qualify for up to an additional $3,000 if you plan to study on any of our Japanese or Korean programs. Applications are due in October and March each year, require three brief essays, and need to be reviewed by an on-campus advisor before considered complete.
If you are a dependent spouse or child of active military personnel, you qualify for the Gilman-McCain Scholarship , which has similar requirements, deadlines, and scholarship amounts as the Gilman Award.
Fund for Education Abroad
The Fund for Education Abroad scholarship program supports students who are underrepresented among the U.S. Study Abroad population, including students of color and first-generation college students. Applications include two essay questions; once completed, the applicant will be considered for a number of different scholarships. There are several application cycles, so check the website for deadlines.
Phi Kappa Phi
Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society provides a limited number of $1,000 grants each year intended to support undergraduate students with a GPA of 3.75 or above to study abroad. Applications are due March 15th and requires two letters of recommendation.

There are hundreds of scholarship programs available to students studying abroad, all with various deadlines and requirements, and you are encouraged to seek out these opportunities. You can see several of these on the State Department Website.
Domestic Awards
Richard Chesteen Federal Internship Endowment
The Richard Chesteen Federal Internship Endowment is a competitive award given to students who have secured internships with federal agencies in Washington, D.C. The Chesteen Award is made possible by donations made in honor of Dr. Richard Chesteen.
Eligibility
Any full-time undergraduate student who has secured an internship with a federal agency in Washington, D.C. is eligible. Students must have a GPA of at least 2.75 and be nominated by a faculty member at UT Martin.
Requirements
Faculty nomination, followed by an application and interview.
