Zoom Security Recommendations

ITS recommends the following Zoom security settings for all your Zoom meetings. It is the host's responsibility to lock down your Zoom session to curb unwanted visitors.

Only allow authenticated users. Only attendees with a UT account may enter the session, and all attendees are required to authenticate before joining. However, if you have a guest speaker (external to the university), this option would also restrict your guest speaker. In this scenario, choose a 'Passcode' or 'Waiting Room' (or a combination of both).

Require a passcode. A passcode may be generated automatically by Zoom, or it can be a pre-determined alpha-numeric series that you choose. Be sure to share this passcode with attendees. If applied, it is automatically included in the text of the meeting invitation. Note: If a passcode is shared publicly or with an unwanted guest, this will not restrict them from attending the session.

Use a waiting room. The waiting room can be activated or deactivated during the session at any time. Review the options on the 'Security' icon within a meeting to quickly engage the waiting room in real-time. With this option applied, attendees enter a virtual waiting area before entering the main session. The host and co-host may admit attendees one at a time or, all at once, via the 'Participants' menu.

Harmonize Tools to Enhance Discussions

Milestones: Harmonize offers a Milestone tool to require students to post early and frequently to improve the quality of the discussion assignment. If you plan to use the Milestone tool, please share these instructions on how students can sync Harmonize dates to their Canvas calendars.

Brainstorm Tool for Faculty: Harmonize offers an Artificial Intelligence (AI) integration to assist faculty in creating discussion prompts. Faculty provide a topic and request prompts for students to address according to different levels of learning. Instructors can then view the AI results, delete the results, or edit the content before deploying.

Generate a Rubric in Harmonize: The Harmonize AI tool can also generate a rubric based on the prompts you provide to students for a discussion. When you begin grading in SpeedGrader, you will see the rubric that you created in Harmonize.

End of Support for Windows 10

Windows 11 is now available for all compatible university machines. To provide enough time to replace machines that are not compatible, ITS will stop supporting Windows 10 machines that can be upgraded on July 1, 2024, and will push an upgrade on that date. To upgrade to Windows 11 ahead of this date, open 'Software Center' located on your desktop or within the programs list. Under 'Operating Systems', you will see the option to install Windows 11. Click 'Install' and then confirm the installation. A system check will run to verify that your computer meets the requirements for Windows 11. If the scan fails, you will receive a message to inspect the error. Click 'Inspect' and take note of the failure reasons listed. Please call the ITS Help Desk at 731-881-7900 if you receive a failure notice or need assistance with upgrading your machine.

UTM Faculty Open Discussion on Use of AI

This recent article from Educause highlights the challenges and potential of using AI in college teaching. Join UTM faculty on Wednesday, February 28, 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. on Zoom as we discuss how faculty are navigating the use of AI in teaching.

Question Banks: A Tool for Academic Integrity and Learning Mastery

Canvas Question Banks can serve multiple instructional strategies for online teaching by:

  1. creating a unique set of test questions for every student;
  2. offering practice quizzes for student homework; and
  3. allowing students to take a test more than once and with a unique set of questions on each attempt.

UTM Open Wi-FI

UTM Guest has been replaced with UTM-Open and SkyNet-PSK will be shut down this summer. UTM-Open allows for easier registration using your NetID, while allowing guests to temporarily register using an email address; all through a single wireless network. Secure devices such as laptops and phones should use eduroam for WPA2-Enterprise encryption. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Help Desk at 731-881-7900.
