NEW JERSEY'S FRANCOPHONE DEMOGRAPHY


66,000 of New Jersey's residents are native speakers of French, French Creole. Nearly 154,000 New Jersey residents claim either French or French Canadian ancestry (nearly 2% of its population).  31,963 foreign-born Haitians in New Jersey (4th largest such population in the US).  Newark is so diverse as to have a West African neighborhood.

FRENCH MOMENTS IN NEW JERSEY HISTORY

1524 - Giovanni da Verrazzano, sailing in the service of France, explored the Jersey Coast.

1672 - The first Catholics in the State of New Jersey were French and Irish immigrants who crossed the Hudson River from the settlement of New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island and established themselves in what is now Middlesex County.

1680s - Huguenot family names appear in the towns of the Monmouth shore.

1690s - Huguenots fleeing France, and Long Islanders who settled at Cape May.

1730 - Huguenots come to Morris County.

1647 - Nicholas Justice built a log and weatherboard which became the Justice-Peaslee House on Kings Highway in Clarksboro NJ.

1744 - "King George's War," between France and England.

1778 - In the Spring, the French Navy was threatening to enfold the British in the Delaware Bay and disrupt sea supply lines.

1781 - On August 19th, Franco-American troops lead by Washington and Rochambeau (9,000 Americans and 5,000 French )crossed into New Jersey, heading toward Virginia.

1817 - Joseph Bonaparte, banished from France and Spain, settled in New Jersey under the name of Count de Survilliers (though Americans tended to call him Mr. Bonaparte).

In 2006, Canadians made more than 238,300 visits to New Jersey, spending $70 million.  In 2005 New Jersey was the 12th largest exporting state in the nation. In that year, one-sixth (16.7 percent) of all manufacturing workers in New Jersey depended on exports for their jobs.

Foreign Direct Investment

In 1999, there were at least 90 companies in New Jersey operating as subsitiaries of French companies.

In 2002, 6.3% of New Jersey's work force was employed by foreign-owned companies, giving it a rank of 5th in the country for this aspect of its internationl economy.

In 2005 New Jersey was home to over 14,000 foreign-based firms (over $36.8 billion invested). Of those, 12,940 or 92 percent were small and medium-sized enterprises, with fewer than 500 employees. In the same year foreign-controlled companies employed 214,000 workers in New Jersey (6.2 percent of the state’s total private-industry employment), the seventh largest total among the 50 states. Two of the five top national sources of this investment were countries where French is an official language. 

New Jersey's office of International Trade & Protocol won second place honors for "Best Foreign Direct Investment Promotional Strategy" from Foreign Direct Investment Magazine as part of the publication's search for the U.S. Cities and States of the Future 2005/2006.
