Language Immersion Programs

UT Martin offers an extensive list of opportunities to study foreign languages abroad. These include programs ranging from 2-6 weeks in the summer to an entire semester (or academic year) abroad. Learning a foreign language in its country of origin is one of the most transformative experiences available - both personally and professionally - during your university years. Consider this immensely valuable opportunity to improve your fluency in the following foreign languages and to immerse yourself in the culture and traditions of your chosen host country.

Japanese

The Japanese program at UT Martin facilitates a variety of language immersion Study Abroad opportunities in Japan. Students can participate in a summer 2-4 week program or spend one or two semesters at our partner institutions listed below learning Japanese.

All students wishing to study abroad in Japan are required to complete JAPN 222 prior to participating. During their term or semester of travel, they will pay UT Martin tuition, housing costs in Japan, and travel costs. FAFSA funds (Pell Grant, Stafford Loans) can be used for all program costs, making this one of the most affordable Study Abroad opportunities.

Students may choose from the following participating institutions:

  • Hirosaki University (弘前大学)
  • Hiroshima Jogakuin University(広島女学院大学)
  • Takasaki City University of Economics (高崎経済大学)
  • Aichi Shukutoku University (愛知淑徳大学)
  • Summer Japanese Language/Culture Exchange Program at Fukuoka Jogakuin Daigaku(福岡女学院大学)

Inquiries regarding qualifications or program details regarding Study Abroad in Japan should be directed to Ms. Kyoko Hammond.

Long Term Study Abroad

Students wishing to take their travel abroad to the next level should consider spending an entire semester studying abroad. Spending a full semester abroad fully immerses students in the culture of their chosen destination and gives them a unique, more in-depth experience with the people and the place.

UTM in Siena

UTM in Siena is UT Martin's signature study abroad, offering students of all majors a full semester, faculty-led education abroad program, with courses offered in English. Each semester in Siena, Italy, students can take a number of general education courses, along with specific major courses depending on the UTM faculty who travel with students. And because the program is run specifically for UTM, students can use all federal, state, and institutional financial aid they receive towards the cost of the program, making UTM in Siena affordable for any student who attends UT Martin. For more information on UTM in Siena, click here or contact the director of the CGEE.

Other Destinations

For those looking to study abroad long term in another destination, consider a semester abroad with one of our institutional partners. Most programs are taught in English and offer courses that will transfer back to UT Martin. If you see a program with any of our partners listed below, be sure to come meet with the director of the CGEE to discuss how to fund your program and how to ensure your course work transfers back to UTM.

University Study Abroad Consortium (USAC)

USAC is a non-profit organization that provides students with study abroad opportunities in universities in 26 different countries all over the world. Programs are available in nearly any major, many of which have costs very similar to what a semester at UTM will cost you. To see where USAC can send you, click here.
